The Salary Fallacy

I'm working on getting updated numbers for new players in the MLS such as Paulo Wanchope and Daniel Osorno. But with the numbers I have right now, the Rapids have outspent 3 of the top teams in the league. DC United, New England and Chivas USA all have spent less on player salaries than the Rapids. This isn't some magical salary cap massaging of the numbers, this is straight up salary totals. So why is this team went 1/3 of the season without winning a game?

What prompted this research?

Clavijo has consistently claimed that he has nothing to work with. Fernando recently said, "This team, with the lowest budget in the league, has made the finals of the Western Conference two seasons in a row. And you see other teams in the league who don't even make the playoffs, they don't fire their coach."

What technicality is he pulling to claim this? Did DCU spend big bucks to bring in Fred and Emilio? They didn't. Fred came for peanuts as he was almost available on a free. They got Emilio on a free. So what budget is Clavijo talking about? And how is it that Fernando has access to a comprehensive list of these numbers when the rest of us do not?

Or is Fernando simply making a claim that isn't true?
