"... there's something within that front office ... "

Listening to Gol TV from 12/20 and I there's an interesting bit about the Rapids and potential signing of Jared Borgetti last season ...

Phil Schoen: "... take a look at Jared Borgetti. This is a guy that scored more goals than anyone in Mexican Soccer history. But the charisma isn't quite there, the fan following isn't quite there. Something just doesn't seem to click with the idea of him being a marquee draw."

Julian Gonzalez: "I'm going to tell you something. I love Jared Borgetti, the all-time leading goal scorer in Mexican National Team history. A guy that has played in Bolton, has played in England, and has plenty of experience.

"From what I understand, he had the chance to be here, in the MLS, two years ago. I talked to some high ranking official within the Colorado Rapids that said, 'We had him wrapped up. The only problem was that management wanted a higher profile player with the team. But they didn't want to spend the money. They wanted to get some guy that could sell jerseys, but yet they didn't want to spend the money.

Welcome to DSG Park - please slow down.

"I don't get it. I think there's something within the front office of the Colorado Rapids that's keeping it from advancing. Because if you want to sign sign a player that's going to sell jerseys, you're going to have to cough up some money. And Borgetti was a good opportunity because there are a lot of Mexicans that live in Colorado."

If you don't watch American Soccer - I highly recommend it. They don't hold their punches and give a lot of good news.

Happy Holidays!

Happy Festivus everyone!!! Hoping you all are keeping warm and busy.

As a gift to you all, Class VI would like to offer you some foresight into the 2008 Colorado Rapids edition ... please keep away from children under five!

Our first bit of information is that inside sources are confirming that the rumors of Jared Borgetti signing with the Colorado Rapids hold no water.

Niko Herndez

Jose Cancela

Next up is the status of a couple Rapids Players. Jose Cancela, who made $156,000, and Niko Hernandez, who made $130,000, are both out of contract with the team.

This opens up one International Player Roster Spot, leaving the Rapids with five out of eight spots filled, assuming neither player resigns with the team.

With the addition of Zach Thornton leaving the Rapids, a total of $243,000 has been freed up for the upcoming $2.3 Million dollar Salary Cap.

Rapids Parking Update

Following up on last week's Fishwrapper News we have some more information.

tailgate map location

Remember us saying that NoFanAlone.com was slowly following up on the various parking rumors swirling around?

Well.... for once that's no slam on the Rapids. They actually responded quickly to various FOIA (Freedom Of Information Act) requests. They didn't even destroy the video tapes...

Here's the current skinny:

1. Not everything has been decided. The Rapids are still considering various parking options.

2. Parking at The Dick will remain free. (I'm assuming this means "for all visitors" but you can make up your own mind 'bout that)

3. Here's the direct quote from the Rapids management: "we do have plans to offer full season ticket holders a special parking area - we have additional research to do in order to determine where this area is to ensure that it is an actual benefit and not just perceived added value. Regardless of where the area exists, it should in no way hinder your ability to continue your pre-game activities. We support your efforts and will do whatever necessary to keep your tailgate area available to you moving forward."

I think the Rapids have made clear that they respect Class VI and what we are trying to do, and support our tailgates.

Elvis was a Rapids fan

all_shook_up.jpg

All Shook Up
(shortened with apologies to Elvis)

I'm itching like a man on a fuzzy tree
My friends say I'm actin' wild as a bug
I'm all shook up.

My hands are shaky and my knees are weak
I can't seem to stand on my own two feet
Who do you thank when you have such luck?
I'm all shook up.

Please don't ask me what's on my mind
I'm a little mixed up, but I'm feelin' fine...

But is there more to the story?

Think "the calm before the storm."

Sometimes, it's a calm, sunny day outside. The birds are chirping, the grass is greener over there, and we still have Fernando Clavijo as the coach.

But underneath the pleasant, somewhat useless Fall day, there is a storm brewing.

Takin' one for the team...

Thanks to a NoFanAlone.com fan for sending this one in... There's no joke I can make that's funnier than the article itself...

Dicks buys Chicks

dick_chicks_small.jpg

So why did I take one for the team? Because I actually went on the "internet" and tried to find an appropriate image to illustrate this entry... yikes!

Just browsing... Hallo Hendo!

A recent discussion I was reading referenced an article about ex-Rapids players, and had me browsing some sites for historical information.

BTW - Always a great way to spend a Saturday night!

Well, I came across one piece that sort of struck a chord with me, and I thought I'd link to it for those interested in the way-back machine of Internet history.

May 25th, 2005:

Pray for a Three-Peat -- Veteran Henderson traded to Columbus via D.C.

Dunno why it seemed so pertinent, but a fun little memory nonetheless. Whaddya think?

News you can use or lose

fishwrapper_classvi.jpg
Quality news, before it smells

We told you the Fishwrapper would be back for the off-season. Turns out we were actually telling the truth. Who knew? ;-)

Lots of swirling stuff surrounding the Rapids these days. No, it's not snow... and man, us riders could use some of that.

We've "Fallen Back" into DRT! Yep.... December Rumor Time. Use it or lose it. Lesseee....

First, may we address the Borchers thing? The good folks over at FC Rocky had the pull to get official word that Nat is officially not in negotiation with the Rapids. It's nice to have friends working on the behalf of fans!

In defense of NoFanAlone.com's reporting that Borchers *is* negotiating with the Rapids, it's probably against FIFA regs to officially negotiate with someone under contract (remember how LA couldn't talk to Beckham before January 1 last year?).

We are choosing to assume that this is a wink-wink "Hey, look, it's a completely random meeting with Nat Borchers and high-level Rapids mgmt. at a neutral location" sort of thing. We can absoSmurfly *guarantee* that Borchers was in Denver this past week, and in position to bump into Rapids management if he wanted to. Probably still is. I mean, seriously, who goes back to Norway in December?

For everyone who worships large, Norwegian blonds, don't give up hope yet.

Next up.

beckham_perfume.jpg
BilFish reacts to the news that Beckham (and the Galaxy) will open 2008 in Commerce City!

It's as true as it gets. First swirled during MLS Cup '07 earlier this month, the Rapids are tentatively confirming that Beckham will be injuring his ankle in March, just prior to not arriving to face the power of the Rapids at a home opener in the April Cold of Colorado.

Okay, anything more swirling around that may be of interest?!?

Perhaps. This only applies to people who drive to The Dick. Those who walk, or ride unicycles or whatever, can skip this one.

PARKING: It is changing for next year. The Rapids figure they need to keep ironing out new wrinkles in 2008. The Rapids are, according to rumors and reports, planning to implement reserved parking for 2008.

Why? Dunno. What does "reserved" mean? I haven't asked them. But my hunch is that they desperately need to add value to season ticket holder packages by taking away free parking (or at least "good" parking) from the rest of the fans. Something like that.

We're trying to follow up on this story (slowly) because it could have effects on how Class VI tailgates and enjoys the games. First, if you get "reserved" parking or whatever in another section, can you still hang out in Lot AA with Class VI? Second, will Class VI be able to continue to meet in AA or will we get bumped?

Dunno. We'll keep you up to date, but for now we're not panicking.

...Sooooo.... We wanted to get the rumor mill started with just a few tidbits to whet a dry December whistle.

Check back next week for some killer new rumors to heat things up.
